A single USB-C or Thunderbolt cable running from a laptop to a dock carries several completely different kinds of traffic at once — video output to one or more monitors, USB data to peripherals, wired ethernet, and power delivery back to charge the laptop — so one cable in the morning replaces plugging in five or six separate ones.

That's harder than it sounds because all of that traffic is competing for the same cable's total bandwidth, and how much bandwidth is actually available depends heavily on which standard the dock and the laptop's port both support. A genuine Thunderbolt connection carries meaningfully more bandwidth than a basic USB-C connection that happens to look identical from the outside.

That's where cheap docks actually fail: a lower-bandwidth dock can drive one monitor at full resolution and refresh rate without trouble, then visibly struggle — dropped refresh rate, lag, or a monitor that simply won't detect — the moment a second 4K display, a fast external SSD, and ethernet are all asked to share the same connection at once.

Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 docks currently represent the safest bet for a demanding multi-monitor setup specifically because their bandwidth is guaranteed by the standard's certification requirements, where a generic USB-C dock's actual throughput can vary meaningfully between manufacturers even when the port itself looks identical.

The practical check before buying one: match the dock's stated standard, and the laptop's actual port capability, not just its physical shape, to what you actually intend to run through it — number of monitors, their resolution and refresh rate, and whether you need full power delivery back to the laptop at the same time — rather than assuming any USB-C dock handles any USB-C laptop the same way, or that a dock that worked fine with a previous laptop will behave identically with a new one.
