Mechanical Keyboard Switches, Explained for People Who Type for a Living
Three switch families, three different answers to the same question: how do you want your finger to know a keypress registered?
A mechanical keyboard switch is the individual spring-and-contact mechanism under each key, and the three broad families — linear, tactile, and clicky — differ in exactly one thing: what happens, physically, between the moment you press and the moment the keystroke actually registers.
Linear switches offer a smooth, consistent press from top to bottom with no bump and no distinct feedback point — like flipping a light switch with completely even resistance the whole way. They're popular for gaming, where an uninterrupted press matters more than feeling the exact registration point.
Tactile switches add a small physical bump partway down the keystroke, felt through the fingertip, marking the actuation point. Many typists prefer this because it lets them register a keystroke without fully bottoming the key out against the keyboard, which can reduce finger fatigue over a long typing session.
Clicky switches add an audible click at that same tactile bump — everything tactile switches offer, plus an audio cue on top, at the cost of being the loudest of the three families by a wide margin, a real consideration in a shared office or on a video call.
Individual switches within each family also vary in actuation force — commonly somewhere between 35 and 60 grams of pressure required to register a press. A lighter switch can mean faster typing with less finger effort, but also a higher chance of accidental keypresses for a heavier-handed typist, which is exactly why keyboard enthusiasts frequently buy switch testers — small sample sets of a few keys each — before committing to a full board.
Actuation force (how hard you have to press) and actuation point (how far down the keystroke registers) both affect typing speed and finger fatigue over an eight-hour day in ways that are easy to dismiss until you've actually typed for hours on the wrong switch for your hand.
