A UPS — uninterruptible power supply — gets thought of purely as blackout insurance: keep the lights on long enough to save your work and shut down cleanly. That's a real benefit, but it's not the main reason a UPS is worth having on a home dev setup; the more common, less visible job is conditioning the power that's already reaching your outlet, not just backing it up when it disappears entirely.

Household power isn't a perfectly clean, constant voltage — it fluctuates in small ways constantly, and occasionally spikes or sags meaningfully, from things as ordinary as a large appliance's motor kicking on elsewhere in the building. A basic surge protector only guards against the extreme end of that range, a sudden large spike; it does nothing for the smaller, more frequent fluctuations that a UPS with automatic voltage regulation actively smooths out before that power ever reaches your machine.

There's a real difference between UPS types worth knowing before buying one: a standby UPS sits idle and switches to battery only when it detects a real problem, with a brief switchover gap; a line-interactive UPS actively regulates minor voltage fluctuations without switching to battery at all, correcting them in place; and a double-conversion (online) UPS continuously runs all power through its battery and inverter, providing the cleanest possible output at a real premium in cost, typically reserved for genuinely sensitive, always-on equipment.

Sizing one correctly matters as much as picking the type — a UPS is rated in VA (volt-amps) and watts, and it needs enough headroom to cover your actual equipment's combined draw (a desktop tower, monitors, networking gear) for the runtime you actually need, which for most home setups is just enough time to save work and shut down cleanly, not to keep working through an extended outage.

For a home developer, the practical case is strongest for anything that genuinely hates an abrupt power loss — a desktop running a database or a long compile, networking equipment you don't want dropping mid-deploy, or any machine you'd rather shut down cleanly than have simply die. A basic line-interactive UPS covers most of that case at a reasonable price; the higher-end online double-conversion tier is real overkill for a typical home office.
